Philosophy Day and UNESCO
Philosophy is an important means of conceptualizing the social and economic changes taking place in China today. It is also a potentially valuable tool for addressing the many challenges facing China in this process—poverty, inequality, just governance, environmental conservation, and human rights. The need for philosophical reflection and analysis, particularly in this era of rapid market development and globalization, is important not only for making sense of current trends but also for guiding future strategies.
UNESCO, as the “intellectual arm” of the United Nations, aims to build a bridge between philosophical ideas and the reality of people’s everyday life. An important part of our program is the annual Philosophy Day, which will be held this year on November 18th. The event will again feature presentations and discussion by eminent scholars and cultural figures aimed at centering philosophy in the development debate. Our goal is to promote public interest in philosophical ideas and research, encourage philosophy education especially among youths, create and sustain a forum for debate and exchanges, and stimulate philosophical reflection on contemporary world problems. Through this and other public events, we hope to continue our work in embedding philosophy in our overall approach to socially sustainable development.
